It's funny how different circumstances change things. I mean I go away from Jon all the time to fly up to work. I should be used to his not being here-ness. But I'm not. It feels really lonely being in the house that would normally contain him but he's not there. I'm such a sook. Also for a couple of days there it wasn't even like I could call him if I needed to. Oh and I missed his calls from singapore because of my stupid mobile acting up.

I've been able to talk to him online though so it's not all bad.

There is an art to drawing lines. For a straight line you start at one point focus on the destination and draw it all without looking at the line. Curved lines are a flick of the wrist. Drawing a curved line between two points involves starting at one going half way then starting at the other and joining the two. I am a perfectionist with the lines. I'll draw it, erase it and redraw it until it's perfect. Honestly, it all saves time with digitisation.

I have been drawing lines all day. No seriously ALL day. Tomorrow I may be colouring in between those lines. Geology is... getting paid to be a preschooler.

Well it appears that the bush fire that's been hovering around us for a couple of days has decided to take a turn closer to the camp and the road. It's moving east of us but it keeps cutting back and edging closer to us as well. On the way back from the drilling area I could see flames in the distance over the ridges and now a couple of hours later the flames are cresting the ridge.

We've started using the dozers to cut back on the road and just sort of widen the gap. People are taking regular trips out to monitor it.

Here's hoping it decides to turn again in the other direction.

I'll try and post some photos and stuff later.
Spraining one's ankle upon returning home for a week break after work is not recommended. It seriously hampers being able to do anything. In short it's frustrating as all hell.

On wednesday night after getting back from the airport I sprained my ankle carrying my bags down the small amount of stairs we have. I did a pretty decent job of it too. My foot swelled up to the size of a tennis ball. I went to see the doctor the next day and he sent me off to get my foot x-rayed. Luckily I hadn't broken anything but I have torn one of the ligaments and damaged the other two.

Suffice to say it's going to take a while to heal up enough to be able to walk on it properly. About seven days or so. Of course I fly back to work in five. I'll still be going because we are seriously short of geos at the moment. I just won't be able to go on a rig or do anything that requires a fully functional foot.

I still went to see Varekai. Damned if I was going to miss that but it was a quite a bit of a strain on me and I was pretty much useless for the rest of the evening. Still it was several shades of awesome.

Tonight I'm still heading off to the PAniC Masquerade ball because I want to go and we kinda need all the help we can get. I imagine I'll be sitting down taking tickets mostly. I doubt I'll be going anywhere near the dancefloor. Still there'll be some nice music playing.

I got to see a whole bunch of folks again. Many from adelaide some from melbourne (although they tended to be running around a lot, weren't they Mark?). Also damn you again for your Naruto manga scans. Callum won the day with a lovely sentimental video. Oh, and I got to meet Danielle from canberra. Ah, so many editors together in one room racing against the clock. Good times.

We also shopped around melbourne a lot. Consumed all sorts of fantastic foods. Went the crown casino (they had awesome light displays). Oh and we got to see the pixar exhibit at AMI. Well worth it.

Now all that fun's been had I've got to get to bed because I've got a flight early in the morning.

Especially since the compressor broke on a rig this morning. That means I'll have been up here for two weeks without my project even starting! So more piecemeal work for me to do for the next couple of days.

I went out to H1S with Haley and Tracey yesterday and after we finished re-sampling some materials we headed off to see the mine camp and their fabled shop. I confess to being amazed at the thing... I mean it had an ATM! I immediately spent the entire $20 I'd brought on various things. Including conditioner, I have certainly been missing that.
I forgot how full on a project could be even when you aren't on the rigs. I swear I've had my brain split in all sorts of different directions today. Of course having two incidents (no one was hurt) today doesn't help matters. I only did the report for the minor one of the two.

I've been so tired lately too. I was in perth too long, I've become accustomed to normality and to Jon. I miss him.

I think I've finally got all the info ready for the rigs. Although knowing my luck I'll be re-printing it all again tomorrow because something has changed. It's not really particularly hard work just brain intensive. You have to keep track of so many different things and those things can change rapidly. Honestly, I'm ready to knock off now but can't do that got to keep turning over.
We have acquired a office mascot today. It's sitting there staring at me through the leaves of the pot plant with it's big yellow owl eyes. There's a little bit of a story behind it.

Last week we had several hundred zebra finches commit suicide on one of our sites. They decided that instead of drinking from the water filled sump they'd have a sip from the gluggy remains of the drilling mud that hadn't been properly disposed of. It generally gets disposed of in the sump since it's a non-toxic compound. Anyway the reason the finches died was because this concentrated glop from the bottom of the tank is rather sticky. So basicaly they died like those dinosaurs did in the La Brea tar pits.

Anyway back to our office owl; apparently birds are scared off by giant plastic owls. I can just imagine one of these on every drill rig. Hehe :) Personally I think we should just stick with the stuff that doesn't create a gluggy sediment like this one did. Also I really want to take a photo of that owl and submit it to the building photography competition under the workplace category.

After hours spent pondering I believe I have the answer to the question that has been plaguing gamers. Where do <s>we</s> they go from here? (bonus score - dual reference) It boils down to escalation. We began the day with Red, Blue and Yellow. Then followed Gold, Silver and Crystal. Things were broken up slightly with FireRed and LeafGreen but then recovered with Ruby, Saphire and Emerald. The cycle of threes has (barely) been maintained it must continue! But now we have Diamond and Pearl. What can possibly trump that and maintain the trinity?

I sat here and I thought, "Nothing trumps diamond. They have undone themselves." But then I realised it's all a fallacy! The three don't have to genuinely link they just have to look like they do... to a six year old child. Crystal is not truely on par with gold and silver it just seems like it is since it's similarly expensive. Just as pearl doesn't truely compare with diamond neither does the third DS ititeration have to.

Thusly I present to you the solution I theorise: The third DS iterartion shall be called Pokemon - Opal!

It's obscure engough that people will know it's expensive but the majority won't recall how much. Instead of being linked to a single colour like the deep blue of Diamond and the pastel pink of pearl, it can be shiny multicolours. It doesn't trump diamond by any means but it's engough of a jump sideways (much like pearl) that it won't be noticed... right?

This is really just a note to myself.

It occurred to me today that a song by Sarah Mclachlan makes me think of Light from Death Note. So it could be an amv idea but then again I have a love/hate relationship with the series. Also to accomplish it I'd need to get vista to co-operate with my old software.

Building A Mystery

you come out at night
that's when the energy comes
and the dark side's light
and the vampires roam
you strut your rasta wear
and your suicide poem
and a cross from a faith
that died before Jesus came
you're building a mystery

you live in a church
where you sleep with voodoo dolls
and you won't give up the search
for the ghosts in the halls
you wear sandals in the snow
and a smile that won't wash away
can you look out the window
without your shadow getting in the way
oh you're so beautiful
with an edge and a charm
but so careful
when I'm in your arms

(chorus)
'cause you're working
building a mystery
holding on and holding it in
yeah you're working
building a mystery
and choosing so carefully

you woke up screaming aloud
a prayer from your secret god
you feed off our fears
and hold back your tears

give us a tantrum
and a know-it-all grin
just when we need one
when the evening's thin

oh you're a beautiful
a beautiful fucked up man
you're setting up your
razor wire shrine

chorus

repeat chorus
God, I hate that "creationist museum" that's opened up recently. Also I do not believe I am using God's name in vain within that previous statement. I keep coming across it in newspapers and websites and the radio. I came across it again on the abc newsite again today and decided to google it because I wanted to know what part of geology they were claiming "supported" thier model. I figured they were using a incredibly dodgy age dating method since there are a few that give huge age ranges. Which they could still be using but I didn't find any mention of specifics like that.

What I did find was Flood Geology. Which claims that the entire fossil record, the geological stratigraphic succession and the geomorphology of the earth was generated in one catastrophic event. The great flood commonly associated with Noah and the ark. The entire geological history of the earth generated in 150 days. Wow, that was some flood eh?

This infuriates me like you wouldn't believe. It's just so fundamentally implausible. For it to be possible it would mean that all we know of geology as it functions now did not apply during that time. Some sort of omni-geology occured instead. Erosion and sedimentation would have had to occured at a thousand, million, billion times the pace it occurs today. Dinosaur skeletons would have to have been transformed into diamond so they could survive rapid processes occuring around and then transformed back into regular old calcium by the time we dug them up. And only God himself knows how those footprints survived. Maybe physics didn't apply then either. But God can do that sort of thing... right?

I mean there's all these fabulously robust and amazingly intricate systems operating in nature that can do all this miraculously anyway but God's going to use something more miraculous to achieve it. So that only the young earth creationist fundamental christians can go to heaven. Seriously why can't people see how amazing our world is, right now? Why not see God in that? In the world created by God? Why do you have to make up fantasies to believe in God?

In the wikipedia entries I was reading there were six variations of christian creation beliefs. Only one of those requires that you are so incredibly dismissive of modern science.

1. Today for the fourth time in a couple of months I was mistaken for working in bookstore. I was told that I looked confident so they assumed I was an employee. Yeah, I don't understand it either. Where did they get that impression?

2. In my random browsing of the bookstore I came across a book that had taken the core ideas from Buffy and Charmed and tried to smush them together. Three sisters of whom one is the destined slayer, one the healer and one will become a vampire. So yes, Charmed with vampires... which I'm fairly sure it had anyway. Oh and should I mention that their mother was killed by a vampire just like Blades? Don't read me wrong, I don't care about idea poaching or anything like that I just find it hilarious. And the real kicker is that it's a M&B romance novel. Ha!

3. My office at work has quite literally become a jungle. Someone decided to order some office plants and lets just say they are everywhere. I fully expect to find one resting on the toliet seat at some point.

4. The lady at the store accidently gave me the wrong muffin but seriously who would think to make a lime and coconut muffin. It was odd and foul.

So anything odd happened to you lately?
